Mathematics

The study of mathematics is mandatory from Kindergarten to Year 10.

By studying mathematics, students learn to work mathematically – developing fluency, understanding, problem-solving, reasoning and communication skills.

The syllabus consists of the following strands:

  • number and algebra
  • measurement and geometry
  • statistics and probability.

In Year 11 and 12, the study of mathematics is optional. Courses offered include:

  • Mathematics Extension 2 (Year 12 only)
  • Mathematics Extension 1
  • Mathematics Advanced
  • Mathematics Standard 2
  • Mathematics Standard 1 (Optional HSC examination)
  • Mathematics Life Skills.

Years 7 and 8

At The Rock Central School, classes are relatively small and mixed ability in nature. Each topic is addressed to the whole class together, although pupils have the opportunity to work at their own pace. Suitable remediation or extension work is given to enable all students to perform to the best of their ability. Homework is set as per the School's homework policy.

Problem solving, investigations and practical activities (including regular use of computers) are undertaken as an integral part of the curriculum and as part of weekly "maths workshop" lessons. It is intended that 'advanced' ability students will complete the course in weeks 25-30 of Year 8, thus giving the opportunity for review and extension work and/or early commencement of Year 9 mathematics working towards level 5.3.

The Maths Classroom has an Interactive Whiteboard which is used to enrich teaching and learning. Students can access online learning using laptops via our wireless network or by using the Computer Room. A variety of 'traditional' and technological sources are used to cover the course requirements.

Years 9 & 10

At The Rock Central School, pupils work in ability groups, working towards either of levels 5.1, 5.2 or 5.3 (by the end of Year 10) as appropriate to their level of ability. Each of these courses has common elements. Problem solving, investigations and practical work (including the use of computers) are undertaken as an integral part of each course.

The common elements of the courses are covered by the whole class (or a combination of groups) together. At other times, topics or themes may be undertaken by the three groups separately. Suitable remediation or extension work is given to enable all students to perform to the best of their ability. Homework is set as per the School's homework policy.
